Granddaddy Purple is an indica marijuana strain that goes by many different names, including “Grand Daddy Purp,” “Granddaddy Purps,” “GDP,” and “Grandaddy Purple Kush.” Popularized in 2003 by Ken Estes, Granddaddy Purple (or GDP) is a famous indica cross of Mendo Purps, Skunk, and Afghanistan. Other people claim it is Big Bud x Purple Urkle. Either way, this California staple inherits a complex grape and berry aroma from its Purps and Ghani heritage. GDP flowers bloom in shades of deep purple, a contrasting backdrop for its snow-like dusting of white crystal resin. Its potent effects are clearly detectable in both mind and body, delivering a fusion of cerebral euphoria and physical relaxation. While your thoughts may float in a dreamy buzz, your body is more likely to find itself fixed in one spot for the duration of GDP’s effects. Granddaddy Purple is typically pulled off the shelf for consumers looking to combat pain, stress, insomnia, appetite loss, and muscle spasms. GDP blesses growers with massive yields which are ready for harvest following a 60 day flowering time indoors.

I’ve been a cannabis user and activist since the 80’s, and voted for our state to be the 1st recreation-legal state. We won, (CO did too, same year), and so for the last 11 years, for which, for the recent half, I’ve been a patient. I’ve had access to a massive assortment of strains, concentrates, cannabinoids, terpene formulations, phenotypes, live/DOH/cured, edibles, etc., that I use pretty much all the time, and the one thing I knew when I went to a dispensary, without a doubt, was that the quality of their GDP was going to work for me.
GDP is in my top 3 or 4, and depending on what I need at that moment, is often #1. It’s been at the top of my list for well over a decade. The taste is epic, the high is relaxing; stress just melts away, and aches and pains don’t have quite the same bite to them. You can couch-lock by ripping bong rip after bong rip, or dab after dab, but usually, I’m just really, really relaxed. I may not *want* to do things, but I can if I want to, and it doesn’t feel like my ass is dragging. All around fantastic strain for any time you’re already well awake, but have nothing that you have to really pay attention to until you’re expecting to sleep. [Read: Wake-n-bake is not recommended.]
Combinations with Super Silver Haze and Sour D, (etc., AKA Montana Silvertip and Sour Grapes, respectively), usually do exactly what you’d want to do to a sativa to make it usable all-day. It takes a bit of the wiry, psychedelic edge off while not diminishing the benefits, and provides a bit more chill sociability.
In contrast to some others here, I have to mention, I experience chronic nausea and vomiting from a medical condition that out-battles the drugs they give to chemo patients, and this stuff doesn’t even touch it. If you’re looking to quell nausea, GDP is NOT the answe. I highly suggest finding a strain with Sour Diesel or Chemdawg genetics not too far off from what you have in your hand. They don’t work fast, (no cannabis really does, and none works at all for the hardcore nausea), but you’ll be a lot better after 45 minutes, (when the munchies start to kick). That means you have to stay ahead of it by around an hour, like you would when managing pain. The reason my experience differs with others may be because…
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! — ALL THIS COMES WITH A HUGE CAVEAT — !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:
I’m wondering when someone on this site decided to usurp Big Bud x Purple Urkle as the genetics for this strain? I mean, you can reach and trace back to MP x Af x Sk to the first set of listed genetics from the *actual* cross… if your yoga is excellent. For at least a decade or so, GDP was BB x PU; here, and in most other well known cannabis strain “definition” sites.
    Granddaddy Purple isn’t a creeper.
Whoever cobbled together the first set of genetics listed in the strain description, (now), doesn’t remember that it’s quite often a bad idea to try to make an almost perfect thing better, especially if you’re going to try to sell the perversion, passing it off as the original.
The GDP I’ve had for my entire legally-consuming life has been my favorite indica, and always reliable, no matter who grows it. BIG, BUSHY yields too, or so I’m told. Sounds great for everyone, right?
Now, because Leafly decided there’s a “generally accepted” alternate set of genetics, everyone thinks that it’s okay to twist the formula and keep the name. It’s probably going to get experimented with and diluted, while people cross, backcross, and cross again, staying within those genetic boundaries, and I’m going to get stuck with “GDP” that’s got strong SKUNK running through it, and that’s just FLAT OUT WRONG. Please, let’s not cater to those trying to perfect the next big CONSUMER genetics line, and preserve some of these classics.
You want to cross Afghani, Skunk, and Mendo Purps into some beautiful, stoney, delicious, green and purple moster that just wants to be nice to people? That’s great! That’s FANTASTIC!! I LOVE THAT!!!
Just don’t call it GDP, please?
Grandma[mma] Purple is available, and seems like a natural extension. I did the work for the cannabis marketers. I claim no copyright for any of this blurb. Use GMP, and leave my medicine alone.

One of my go to strains for all occasions
I don’t know why people say it’s a creeper because to me it’s not. Sometimes the heavier indica effects come at the back end which is why it’s more like a indica hybrid to me. I have diverticulitis or a rare form of it. I’ve smoked GDP a least a decade before MD made medical legal. first the 23-25% is very misleading. maybe it’s the terps but it feels more like a 30% to me. Besides the nausea it helps with abdominal pain. it helps with anxiety and I get instantly happy when smoked. I’ll notice myself smiling. Also if you stay moving it doesn’t sink you to the bed or couch like other indicas do. I enjoy a good brownie scout or animal face or snoop dog OG at night but the GDP doesn’t put me out like the others mentioned. it’s like an all occasions bud. Brought some on a cruise with a cart and had no problems staying awake and doing things. but it’s my favorite so maybe it effects me different but please don’t say it’s a creeper. in MD I can get 1/8 for $25 or half for $100 depending on the sales. better than 55 for some of the indicas on the market that claim to be over 30%>

Copped an ounce from WNC CBD and it’s by far my favorite vendor I’ve gotten this strain from. Absolutely amazing quality. No matter vaped or smoked it tasted like a sour grape church wine it was sooo amazing to taste out if a dry herb vape though. Super nice flavor, super nice colors of dark purples and orange hairs. All around good strain. Very relaxing too.
